Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Jyväskylä welcome top international researchers
Tekes is funding two new international top researchers through FiDiPro, the Finland Distinguished Professor Programme. They will do their research work at Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Jyväskylä. Altogether there were sixteen letters of intent.
"In the FiDiPro Programme, international experts evaluate candidate competence and potential," says Erja Ämmälahti, Senior Technology Advisor from Tekes. ?The goal is to find internationally acknowledged top researchers. Accordingly, the project for which the Finnish university needs the contribution of a particular FiDiPro professor has to be challenging and applicable to business life."
"The project evaluation has to consider the Tekes focus areas, the development of our entire innovation environment and particularly the Strategic Centres for Science, Technology and Innovation," she says. "This will ensure that the project supports the strengthening of the research environment."
IT applications for data mining and support for the management of joint innovations
Tekes is funding two new FiDiPro projects. Born in Finland but having made her career at the University of Texas at Austin, Professor Sirkka Järvenpää will join the SimLab research unit at Helsinki University of Technology, while Professor Amir Averbuch from Israel will lead the MIPCOM project at the Department of Mathematical Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä.
The Corinna project headed by Professor Järvenpää will intensify the competence in the SimLab business networks and the exploitation of related information technology. The project will develop the Virtual Value Space (VVS) concept to promote expertise in joint innovations made between companies. Furthermore, the project will empirically study immaterial rights in joint innovation processes. As a result it will generate new scientific data for the organisation and management of joint innovations. Professor Järvenpää is an expert in global virtual teams and group functioning.
The MIPCOM project will establish a research team led by Professor Averbuch at the Department of Mathematical Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä. The aim is to develop and apply for industrial-use stable methods for data mining, processing of multiple data and results visualisation. The project will span five years.
New FiDiPro calls twice a year
FiDiPro - the Finland Distinguished Professor Programme is a funding programme jointly launched by Tekes and the Academy of Finland. It enables distinguished researchers, both foreign and expatriates to work and team up with the best of the best in Finnish academic research. The goal is to create long-term synergy in science and technology.
The Tekes FiDiPro calls are made twice a year according to the calls for public research applications. Funding can be applied for by Finnish universities and research institutes.
The first FiDiPro professors began their work at the beginning of 2007. Altogether Tekes has funded 14 FiDiPro professors.
